How long does a typical engagement last?

Most engagements are for a period of six months, with coaching sessions every other week. This duration and frequency can be tailored to meet a client’s needs and preferences.

What is expected of the client, aside from participating in scheduled sessions?

In successful engagements, clients bring a genuine desire for change, an open-mind, a willingness to be transparent, and a curiosity to learn more about themselves. Some work in between sessions for reading, journaling and other exercises typically occurs, but those activities are at the client’s discretion, and generally would only entail an additional 4-5 hours a month.

What are some of the common things clients hire you to work on with them?

It honestly varies greatly. The coaching focus will always be what the client wants — whether it is personal, work related, or some combination of both. Coach Murph is open to anything on the client’s mind, and his approach and training work well across the board.

Some examples from the professional realm include: relationship challenges with co-workers, career advancement, disruptive organizational changes, cultural alignment issues, adjusting to a new role and responsibilities, or stagnation and diminished motivation.

On the personal side, topics can range from: the work/life balance dynamic, financial goals, career change, spiritual development, improving physical and mental health, family and personal relationship challenges.

This sounds like a form of therapy. Is it?

No. A coach is not a therapist, or mentor, or consultant. The role of a coach is to partner in support of the client, facilitating a client-driven process that motivates action towards well-defined goals. This critical issue will be explained in detail before any engagement is finalized.

Are any evaluation tools or 360 type interviews a part of the process?

They are not necessary but can be incorporated into an engagement. Once a high-level understanding is established around the client’s objectives, various options can be presented that fit into the overall plan.

Are the coaching sessions in-person or via Zoom?

Either or both, depending on logistical considerations. Coach Murph’s office is in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, VA.

How much does it cost?
The client pays a flat fee for the engagement, which would be billed at the beginning of the term of the agreement, and payable in full within 30 days.

The mutually agreed upon fee would cover all the coaching sessions, unscheduled quick calls and emails outside of scheduled appointments, and access to Coach Murph’s library of resources.

Any additional costs would only occur at the request of and with the prior approval of the client.  These might include a more intensive Discovery and Immersion at the outset, professional testing or 360 type interviews, or travel expenses incurred for in-person sessions outside the greater DC area.
